An engagement is not a marriage. In astrology, that distinction matters.
A broken engagement can be one of the most confusing relationship events because, at one point, the horoscope appeared to support commitment. Families became involved. Plans were made. The relationship became socially recognised. And then something changed.
Vedic astrology can examine this pattern, but there is rarely one placement responsible for it.
The gap between relationship and marriage
The 5th house can describe romance and emotional involvement. The 7th house represents marriage and formal partnership. The 2nd house is relevant to family formation, while the 11th is associated with fulfilment and the realisation of desires. These houses can activate at different times.
This means a relationship can become serious enough for an engagement without the complete marriage framework being activated.
That distinction is important.
Engagement can be the promise of marriage. It is not proof of marriage.
Where interruption enters the picture
For a broken engagement, the astrologer has to examine the condition of the 7th lord, Venus, the 2nd and 11th houses, Navamsha and the running Vimshottari Dasha.
Connections involving the 6th, 8th or 12th can sometimes become relevant when conflict, obstacles, major reversals, withdrawal or separation enter an otherwise active relationship period. But these houses should never be treated as automatic divorce or broken-engagement indicators. Their actual meaning depends on lordship, dignity, associations and the rest of the chart.
Retrograde planets can also coincide with periods of reconsideration, revision and returning to unresolved relationship decisions. But retrogression alone does not mean an engagement will break.

Timing is critical.
A relationship may reach engagement during one planetary period and then encounter a completely different set of significations during the next Antardasha.
This is why simply looking at the transit on the day an engagement breaks can be misleading.
The better question is:
What changed in the planetary period around the event?
Vimshottari Dasha is traditionally used to identify periods in which marriage-related houses and planets become active, while transits provide additional triggers.
And sometimes the chart shows the lesson, not the ending
A broken engagement does not automatically mean the horoscope denies marriage.
