When astrology becomes an excuse

•

The difference between understanding karma and surrendering responsibility.

There is a point where astrology stops helping you understand your life and starts helping you avoid responsibility for it.

“I couldn’t leave. It was karmic.”

“I treated them badly because Mars was affecting my seventh house.”

“I lost the job because Saturn is testing me.”

“We keep hurting each other because we have a past-life connection.”

These statements may sound spiritual. Sometimes they are simply ways of avoiding an uncomfortable fact: we still made a choice.

Jyotisha is a system of karma and timing, but karma should never be confused with helplessness. A birth chart can describe tendencies, circumstances, periods of pressure and areas where certain experiences become more likely. It does not turn a person into a passenger in their own life.

This distinction becomes particularly relevant in October 2026, when Shukra turns vakri on October 3 and Budha turns vakri on October 24.

Retrogrades are often treated as cosmic permission slips. An ex returns, therefore you must reconsider the relationship. A deal goes wrong, therefore Mercury retrograde is responsible. A difficult conversation happens, therefore the planets “caused” it.

No.

A transit can describe the weather.

You still decide whether to walk into the storm.

Shukra vakri can bring old relationships, desires and values back into examination. It does not instruct you to take an ex back. Budha vakri can bring unfinished conversations and decisions back for review. It does not force you to send the message you have been rehearsing for three weeks.

Even Mangal entering Ashlesha on October 17 deserves this distinction. It can symbolically describe heightened emotional reactivity, attachment or deeply held resentment. But “Mars made me do it” is not an astrological interpretation. It is an abdication of responsibility.

This is where I think serious astrology differs from horoscope entertainment.

The purpose of examining a difficult transit is not to remove agency. It is to identify the conditions under which your choices become more revealing.

Saturn is particularly useful here.

Shani represents consequence, time, responsibility and the results of sustained action. Its symbolism is almost the opposite of magical thinking. You cannot chant away every consequence of poor judgement. You cannot call every repeated pattern “karma” and then refuse to change the behaviour producing it.

Karma is not a punishment system.

It is also not an excuse.

If your chart repeatedly shows relationship difficulty, the useful question is not simply, “Why does this keep happening to me?”

It is:

“What am I repeatedly participating in?”

That question can be uncomfortable. It is also where astrology becomes genuinely useful.

For an individual reading, the chart must be judged through Lagna, Chandra, bhava lordship, planetary dignity, drishti, relevant Vargas and Vimshottari Dasha. A difficult period may describe circumstances you did not choose. What you do with those circumstances remains a separate question.

I would never tell a client that they “had no choice” because of their horoscope.

A chart can show the road.

It can show the weather.

It can even show where the road becomes difficult.

But you are still holding the steering wheel.
